What are the different types of synthetic cannabis?

There is great interest in the therapeutic properties of cannabis for some debilitating diseases such as cancer, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and Crohn’s disease. Studies are still ongoing to test the efficacy and safety of traditional medicinal cannabis. Currently, the two forms of synthetic cannabis are Marinol (Dronabinol) and Cesamet (Nabilone).

Marinol synthetic cannabis

Marinol ( Dronabinol ) comes in the form of gelatin capsules and is taken orally. The active ingredient in Marinol is Dronabinol, a synthetic form of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol or delta-9-THC. Marinol is mainly used to treat nausea and vomiting and to stimulate appetite in AIDS and cancer patients. Dronabinol is marketed as Marinol and Syndros, a registered trademark of Solvay Pharmaceuticals.

The name Dronabinol is used commercially and is an appetite stimulant, an antiemetic and is also used against sleep apnea. Its pharmaceutical formulation is based on an oily resin and is in capsules. It is made available by prescription only in the United States, Canada, Germany, Australia and New Zealand.

Cesamet synthetic cannabis

Cesamet (Nabilone) is a capsule drug taken orally. It is used to treat nausea and vomiting in cancer patients who are experiencing side effects from chemotherapy. It is usually taken with or without food two or three times a day during a course of chemotherapy. Nabilone has been shown to be effective in relieving fibromyalgia.

Clinical trials of Nabilone include motor disorders such as parkinsonism, chronic pain, dystonia and spasticity as well as neurological disorders, multiple sclerosis, and chemotherapy nausea. Nabilone is also effective in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases, especially ulcerative colitis.
